Computed tomography-based analysis of the characteristics of fifth metacarpal neck fractures and its clinical applications

Purpose: Understanding the configuration and characteristics of comminuted fifth metacarpal neck fractures is essential for successful operative treatment, especially antegrade intramedullary Kirchner wire (K-wire) fixation. This study aimed to investigate shape fragments in suggest appropriate K-wire position.Methods: Forty-one cases operated from January 2010 April 2022 were enrolled this study. The length width measured, as well distance articular surface head fragment (Da-c) proximal end (Da-h). location was categorized terms four quadrants: dorsal-ulnar (DU), dorsal-radial (DR), palmar-radial, palmar-ulnar.Results: Among 41 patients with fractures, fracture observed 35 (85.4%). mean 7.5±2.3 mm 3.2±0.8 mm, respectively. on dorsal aspect all cases; 27 (77.1%) DU quadrant 8 (22.9%) DR quadrant. Da-c Da-h 5.3±1.6 10.9±1.5 respectively.Conclusion: To ensure stable fixation, it identify before surgery subsequently choose an position.
